Supply Chain Management

Best Buy has many suppliers from overseas as well as the United States. Best Buy has a supply chain system linked to our RSS (inventory) system to monitor product reordering. Delivery time is usually very fast for all Best Buys. The RSS (inventory) system learns customer trends. If a product drops to a certain number, a message will automatically be sent to our warehouse and suppliers to send out more products to our store. Best Buy products such as Sony and Panasonic have to pass their own quality test and inspections by their company and then by Best Buy to guarantee their customers great quality. Best Buy offers guarantees to the customers on their products to reinforce the quality Best Buy offers. Best Buy’s suppliers have supplier certification in which the suppliers are guaranteeing good quality as well. Cost is very minimal since if a store needs more products it will be shipped from the local warehouse. Best Buy usually transfers products that are not selling as much to different locations. Every location has different customer segments which will determine demand. The current system Best Buy uses is RSS (inventory) for its supply chain management. Best Buy has a pretty solid supply chain management and it seems to work. I do not think changing a formula that already works would be a good idea. After all, Best Buy is doing something right since they are still the number one electronic retailer in the world.

A good example of a project that Best Buy created was Magnolia Home Theatre. A few years back, major retailers carried only the basics- home theatre setup with televisions on the walls and basic speakers. Now, Magnolia sells higher end televisions, speakers, and receivers. Only Magnolia certified professionals can work inside Magnolia. Best Buy had to bring all the materials and supplies to its locations while their everyday business was still operating. This presented a major challenge of scheduling and constructing with customers still shopping in the store.
Best Buy does not use Gantt charts or network diagrams; instead they use the daily business tracker and scorecards. The scorecards will tell you exactly how much you are budgeted for that day, how much you should sell in service, geek squad black tie protection plans, and accessories. With the scorecards you have to stay at a certain percentage to stay profitable which consequently affects labor and hours they give employees to work. Best Buy should consider using Gantt charts which would be less costly and can be very beneficial to all its employees and the company overall.

Four Dimensions of Quality

Best Buy uses all four dimensions of quality: quality of design, quality of conformance, availability, and field service. Best Buy makes a lot of their own products such as Dynex, Rocketfish, Geek Squad, and Insignia. Best Buy listens to what customers want and they create a quality of design before the product is even manufactured. Best Buy rigorously checks to make sure all products meet specifications and are not defective by using quality of conformance. Best Buy uses availability by the products carried in their stores. They offer 24/7 customer service and in-store or onsite repair service. Lastly, Best Buy uses field service. They offer service plans to their customers which covers if the product breaks. Best Buy can send the Geek Squad to come out to your house and fix the issue or you can come into the store and they will send it out for service if it’s not repairable.

Best Buy and its suppliers have certification that all products produced are guaranteed against defect. If by some chance a product is mishandled when it gets to a Best Buy store and is defective. Best Buy can send it back and get their full money back. Best Buy can have third parties to inspect the products produced more thoroughly. This would prevent defective items from ever leaving the factory.

Best Buy Managing Quality

Best Buy and Quality of Design:

Best Buy uses this dimension of quality in their products and services every day. For one, Best Buy sells all top quality and design products in its stores. The quality of design aspect of a product really depends on the manufacturer that produces that product which is then sold at Best Buy stores. Best Buy gets to choose which products they will sell at their stores and they choose which designs better fits their customer needs. For example, the newest designs in laptops and other electronics can always be found at your local Best Buy location.

Best Buy and Quality of Conformance:

Since Best Buy gets their products from different manufacturers to be sold at their stores, quality of conformance really falls down to the manufacturers and their productions. Once the manufacturers choose their products designs they then have to evaluate if the product meets the specifications of their design. Best Buy inspects all of the products they sell which is to an advantage to their customers. Customers are more likely to be satisfied with a product if a product does exactly what it is said to do without any complications. This is why it is so important that Best Buy inspects the products before selling it to customers.

Best Buy and the "Abilities":

Best Buy has a very strong advantage over other retailers in this dimension of Quality. For one, in terms of availability they always have continuous service to customers even after they buy. Best Buy offers different forms of customer service to their customers that are easily accessible to fit their needs. They conveniently offer customers customer service through their multiple store locations, via the internet and over the phone. In terms of reliablity since the products sold at their stores are thoroughly inspected before a sale is made, the products are likely to be very reliable as well as its lifespan.

Best Buy and Field Service:

Bets Buy offers many types of field services for their products in order to keep their customers satisfied before and after a purchase. For the convenience of the customer, Best Buy offers warranty on all of their products which include repair or replacement of any faulty products. The process of having any repairs or replacements, are also convenient for the customers through Best Buy's multiple options of contacting one of its representatives. Customers can take their products to their local location or call in for a repair or even speak to a customer service representative for options on replacing their product.

Best Buy currently uses high service quality which helps them stand out against their competitors. They research what is the top product of the moment and make sure that it is available to their customers. By acknowledging consumer needs, Best Buy can then make sure that they meet those needs through their high quality service. I would recommend for Best Buy to emphasize Deming's 14 Management Principles more in-depth. I think that for any company to be successful it all starts at the roots, which is management. If management has associates more educated and involved in all aspects of the company the more it will be of an advantage to the customers.

BEST BUY CONTROL MANAGEMENT

Best Buy is a department store that sells various products to its customers by numerous vendors. Since Best Buy sells other companies products to its customers each individual department has its own quality control and inspections. Each brand of products that are being sold in Best Buy has to meet their own set of regulations and quality before inspected by Best Buy. Products such as Sony and Panasonic have to pass their own quality test and inspections by their company and then by best buy to guarantee their customers great quality. Best Buy also offers guarantees to there customers on their products to reinforce the quality Best Buy offers. Their suppliers have supplier certification this helps Best Buy know their suppliers are guaranteeing good quality as well. They also use quality at the source witch makes each employee responsible for the inspection of each item sold. Best Buy follows the attribute control chart that determines whether a product is good or defective. Since they buy their products from a variety of companies they determine the percentage of defects occurring from that product and note it for the supplier. They use dissatisfied customers and default products to keep track of the supplier’s quality. They use the Pareto analysis to keep track of the causes to the defective items and send them to the supplier to help them improve their quality control. This analysis helps Best Buy and the supplier guarantee better products to their customers. This way they can cut down the frequency of defectives happening to the same products. Best Buy has a good four step system to guarantee good quality to their customers that result in good quality control. They start with using good quality suppliers with supplier certification, Then before the product goes through inventory it is inspected by Best Buy then stocked, before each item is sold the employee again checks over the product to search for any defects before sold to the customer, if a customer has a defect with the item it is noted by the pareto analysis and sent back to the supplier so they can improve on their quality of their products. Since the products go through these steps it helps Best Buy have good quality control and makes it easy for them to guarantee the quality of their products. This enables them to back their products with guarantees. Best Buy could try and have their own inspectors at the manufacturing plants to make sure that the company is following quality standards. It might be a little costly but it would raise their quality on their products. It would also let them have hands on view of the products sold in their stores. By doing this the product will go from manufacturing straight to inventory and stock. They can also try using the six sigma analysis to try and see if it would benefit them since most of the companies that have switched over have had their quality control raise do to the new system. The current system used has been working for them and has been a good system to bring their customers good quality.

Best Buy Service Process Design

The Service-Product Bundles has three parts. 1-Tangible service (explicit service)—what the seller does for you. Best Buy offers knowledgeable salesmen to assist customers with what they are looking for. For example, when a customer buys a computer, or purchases a service. A geek quad agent will come out to the customer’s house to setup a wireless network, or setup a home theatre system. 2-Psychological benefits (implicit service)—how you feel about it. Best Buy will try to make this as smooth as possible so the customer walks out with a good experience. 3-Physical goods (facilitating goods)—what you can carry away. Best Buy sells a variety of electronics that the customer can chose from and take home with them such as televisions, computers, appliances, mp3 players, movies, and so much more.
Best Buy operates on the co-routed service matrix. This gives the customer a moderate number of choices, using a moderately standardized service system. When you shop at Best Buy we can order different colored computers for you. Best Buy offers television services such as “in home setup,” mounting, and even calibration. The geek squad can fix your broken household appliances and even install custom parts you want to add to your computer.
Best Buy has high customer contact. They use self service, focused operations, and technology because of the automated online Best Buy website. The employees are there to answer the customers’ questions and give them the complete solution. Best buy offers good service recovery. If you buy services for a computer such as having antivirus and spyware protection installed and decide you did not like the computer and want to exchange it. Best buy will offer to install the same service on what ever new computer you choose to purchase. If a customer comes in and wants to transfer the data from an old computer to the new computer, Best Buy will accommodate that and if Best Buy is unable to transfer the data, they will refund you the full purchase price.

Best Buy

http://www.downtownyonge.com/files/images/best%20buy.jpg

Best Buy uses a line flow system. All the products are completed and moved through the facility in a set order. The type of customer order Best Buy processes is made to stock. This helps Best Buy provide faster service to customers from available stock and lower costs than a “make to order process.” Best Buy would fall into the make to stock line flow underneath the process characteristics matrix. The major factors that influence the way Best Buy chooses their process selection are market conditions, customer needs, labor, raw materials, and technology. Best Buy should definitely consider adopting economies of scope. Customers will come in to buy a phone, computer, iPod, and ask “Do you carry it in different colors? “ The answer is most likely no. If Best Buy could customize things such as a phone or be like Dell and give the customer the ability to customize their own products they would be even more successful.
